Summer Reading - Z

It's been a busy summer of reading so far.  My latest read came to me highly recommended by my friend Alicia.  Z by Therese Anne Fowler is a historical fiction story of Zelda Fitzgerald.  I really didn't know much about her, other than she was F. Scott Fitzgerald's wife.  And to be honest, I really didn't know much about him other than he was a writer.

I really did enjoy this book and being transported back in time to the 1920's - flappers, prohibition, and bobbed hair.  I really think I could have done well in that era!  Zelda was a fascinating woman - and she and Scott were quite the power couple.  It was interesting to read about them and how they lived the high life back in the day.  I might have to try to read The Great Gatsby now to continue with the Fitzgerald's!

Summer Reads - Gone Girl

Here's another book recommendation.  I love to read - and share my love of books!  I recently finished reading Gone Girl by Gillian Flynn.  This book is going to be turned into a movie, and I have heard great things about it, so I decided to give it a try.  This book went against nearly all of things that I look for in a book.  First of all, it's suspenseful. It's about a husband and wife...and the wife goes missing on their fifth anniversary.  The husband is accused of killing her.  That's all I'm going to say...you've got to read the book :)
In almost all of the books I read, I can relate to a character or at least imagine myself transported into the book.  Not so much this book.  But it was entertaining to read, and you better believe that I'll see the movie when it comes out!

You've Gotta Read This!

I just finished reading The Orphan Train by Christina Baker Kline for a book club recently.  Wow!  Great book!  If you're looking for a great read, then read this.  It's a historical fiction, which I love, about a little girl's journey on the Orphan Train in the early 1900's.  

I admit it, but growing up I wasn't really into history.  So needless to say, I had never heard of the Orphan Train before.  But this book really opened my eyes to this time in history.  Plus parts of the book were set in Minnesota.  So it's always fun to read stories that are 'close to home'.

This isn't very light-hearted, but would be a great book for your summer reading list.

You Need to Read This!

I have a confession to make.  I've never been a big fan of Nicholas Sparks.  His books are just a little too much for me.  You know, a little too sad and a little too predictable.  However, a friend of mine suggested that I read his memoir, "Three Weeks with My Brother."   This book made me change my tune about him.  It's about his childhood, how he became an author, and an amazing trip he took with his brother.  (In fact, it's the kind of trip I would LOVE to go on sometime!)  I laughed throughout the book, and I had the ugly cry going on at the end.  Thank goodness for nap time! 

Whether or not you are a Sparks fan is irrelevant.  But be warned, after reading this I took a chance and read his new book, Safe Haven, and I was reminded again why I don't care for his fiction.  But seriously you need to read this book!



Unbroken...a book review

It's no secret, I LOVE to read. In fact, I always try to have a good one started. Luckily I have a cousin who is a librarian and she knows how to pick good books. So, when Georgie blogged about how good this book is, I knew I had to try it.

Unbroken by Laura Hillenbrand is perhaps the best book I've ever read about World War II. It's not only an unbelievable story but it's also written so it's not so heavy (like most war stories are). You simply must read this book!
